Learning Outcomes

By the end of this activity, learners will:
  • Define the terms "ecosystem services" and "watershed"
  • List major services provided by ecosystems, including water purification, flood and erosion prevention, food production, climate stabilization, air purification and others.
  • Describe the value of many ecosystem services to humans, providing examples
  • Describe the impacts of human communities when ecosystems become damaged and fail to provide their normal services
  • Outline a watershed on a map
  • Conduct research to learn more about human activities that occur within watersheds
  • Predict the threats to water quality in certain watersheds and prescribe or predict actions that could be taken to protect watersheds
