Introduction

GreenLearning piloted Electrifying the Future in Calgary, Alberta, giving high school students and educators in the Calgary Board of Education the chance to take on a unique challenge: converting a 1975 Volkswagen Beetle and a 2009 Ford Ranger into fully electric vehicles, while also installing an EV charging station. Building on the success of this pilot, we aim to support other organizations in keeping pace with the transition to electrified transportation by sharing our insights and experiences.

We are also proud to share that Electrifying the Future has now expanded to Ontario through a partnership with the Peel District School Board. Here, students and educators are diving into the hands-on conversion of a 1999 Mazda Miata, supported by student-led EV club meetings and the installation of a Level 2 charging station. This project highlights our commitment to closing curricular gaps in automotive education while empowering students to lead the charge toward zero-emission transportation in their communities and beyond.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

To increase education and awareness of electric vehicles (EVs), charging infrastructure, and related career opportunities among high school students and educators across Canada
By exploring these resources, learners will understand GreenLearning's insights into electrification projects in Alberta and Ontario

Learners will understand the key concepts we took to:

Convert ICE vehicles into electric in high school settings
Install EV charging stations at a public high schools
Connect youth with learning resources and tools we've developed along the way

NAIT EV Course

We have teamed up with NAIT to offer automotive teachers in Alberta a free pilot course in Electric Vehicle Technology. This training prepares educators to confidently teach students how to work safely on electric vehicles. Teachers will receive a micro-credential badge and must already have their Automotive Service Technician or Red Seal Certification.
