2025 Energy Revealed Challenge Showcase

Raising awareness about energy use and efficiency.
Thank you to everyone who participated and we look forward to seeing the incredible projects students put together next year!

People reached through student learning

kWh of energy saved during lights-out events

kg of GHG emissions saved in a year

First Place Winner - $1,000

New Central Public School, Grade 6
Oakville, Ontario

Students at New Central Public School hosted a Lights Out event, turning off 56 hallways lights and over 250 classroom lights- saving an impressive 23,233kWh of energy in total! For 100 minutes, the school was lit only by natural light, showing just how much energy can be conserved with simple changes.
The students at New Central took part in several outdoor hands-on games and activities focused on topics like climate change, recycling, and conservation. Students played creative games like Earth Keep Up and Climate Change Tag, and even went on a "Lights-Out Walk" reflecting on energy use while engaging their other senses.
Students also took action by identifying new ways to save energy long term. One of their next steps is to ensure Chromebook Carts and other devices are powered down over the weekends, proving their commitment to energy efficiency doesn't stop after one Lights-Out event!

Energy Revealed Workshops

Throughout the school year, GreenLearning hosted a series of virtual workshops titled "Speak for the Trees". These 45-minute sessions engaged students groups across the country in important conversations about GHG emissions, electricity consumption, and ways to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. In total, more than 2000 learners and educators participated in these workshops.

In addition to our virtual sessions, we also delivered in-person workshops at student forums across Ontario, featuring hands-on learning opportunities.  Our Watt Meter station had students measuring the electricity use of everyday appliances and electronics, and calculating their annual usage and GHG emissions, using our energy calculators. By making electricity use visible to students, we encourage them to make sustainable choices as energy leaders in their communities.
